Your alarm goes off… and I know the first thing you want to do is hit that snooze button and sleep just a little bit more. What ends up happening then in your mind, you start to make deals in your head. I know at least I do! Well if I snooze for another 15 minutes, I’ll just skip making breakfast… I’ll just put my hair up in a bun or I just need to rush getting ready… or I just need to drive a little bit faster to work…. etc. NO! We must change that! Each day is a chance to start fresh. Let whatever happened yesterday, whether good or bad, not influence what kind of day you will have today. Also, I know I’m guilty of this as well, but the first thing you should NOT DO in the morning is look at social media or even emails! The morning is FOR YOU and shouldn’t be focused on doing it for anybody else. I’ll get into that in a bit.
What is the FIRST thing that should be done upon waking up??
MAKE YOUR BED! Why? Might not sound that important to start your day… but it’s really not just about making your bed. It’s about instilling order into you life. It’s about accomplishing something right away. Your bed should embody rest and relaxation. If it’s messy, your life will be messy. You may not even be fully awake at this point, but hey, you’ve at least accomplished one thing for the day already!
Next, do something to nourish your mind and body! Taking care of your body is the most important ingredient for daily success. This gives your body the energy and the clarity that it needs to take on the day. Remember, your morning routine is just that, it’s FOR YOU! What will make your body feel great? Some people will exercise at this point, but everyones choice of exercise may differ. Some will go for a run, while others may do yoga. I always encourage doing some sort of meditation, deep breathing exercises. Some people like practicing prayer in the morning. Something simple as a gratitude type exercise such as just thinking about it or journaling your thoughts of what you are thankful for in this moment of time works well too. Whatever makes you feel good, it’s your choice!
Lastly, set your intentions for the day. What are you goals for THIS DAY? Not, what are your goals for the rest of the week, you should focus on this day and this day alone. When we think too far ahead, we start to put too much on our plates and the end goals seem impossible. Remember, you are only ONE PERSON and can only handle so much. Like I mentioned above, people are subconsciously trying so hard to keep up with other people. You may not want to admit it, but we are all guilty now of checking social media when we wake up in the morning. We’re checking our emails to see if our boss needs us to do something. We’re always trying to do something for other people and instead, we lose focus on what’s important with ourselves. We rush too much every day. Because we’re trying to keep up with everyone else. But keeping up with everyone else is only possible when you are all going on the same path. But are we really on the same path?? Nope. STOP TRYING TO GET THERE FIRST. You shouldn’t be a part of someone else’s race. You should be spending your time and energy paving your own way. And the way to pave your own path is to take control of your mornings.
Wake up with purpose. We all have dreams. But it starts with taking control of your mornings to pave your path in life. You will get there. You just have to go at your own speed. Doesn’t matter how long it takes, but by taking steps to take control over each day will certainly help you get there. I hope these tips help you in your daily morning rituals. Try it and see! The options are endless. Mornings should be a time of gratefulness instead of grumpiness because you can’t sleep longer.
Happy Friday! I hope you all have a great weekend!
